Updating Your Template
After your template is published, you can submit updates to fix bugs, add features, or improve the design. Updates go through the same review process as initial submissions.
Version bumping
Every update requires a version bump in your template.manifest.json. Gymlium uses semantic versioning:
| Change type | Version bump | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Bug fixes, minor style tweaks | Patch | 1.0.0 → 1.0.1 |
| New pages, feature additions | Minor | 1.0.0 → 1.1.0 |
| Major visual redesign, breaking changes | Major | 1.0.0 → 2.0.0 |
{
"version": "1.1.0"
}The new version must be higher than the currently published version. Uploads with the same or lower version number will be rejected.
Submitting updates
Make your changes
Edit your template files locally. Test thoroughly with the dev server.
Bump the version
Update the version field in template.manifest.json.
Validate
npm run validate -- --template your-template-namePackage
npm run package -- --template your-template-nameUpload
In the developer portal, navigate to your template and click Upload Update. Upload the new zip file.
Review
Updates go through the same review process. The reviewer checks the changes against the previous version.
Backward compatibility
When updating, consider the trainers already using your template:
Safe changes (backward compatible)
- Adding new optional pages
- Improving existing styles
- Fixing responsive layout issues
- Improving RTL support
- Optimising performance
- Adding dark mode improvements
- Better loading states
Breaking changes (use caution)
- Removing pages that trainers may have enabled
- Changing CSS custom property names
- Changing the overall layout structure significantly
- Removing features trainers rely on, such as page builder sections or the blog layout
Breaking changes in a patch or minor update can disrupt trainers’ live websites. If you must make breaking changes, use a major version bump and clearly document what changed.
Update changelog
While not required, including a brief changelog in your template’s README.md helps reviewers understand what changed:
## Changelog
### 1.1.0
- Added Events page layout
- Improved mobile menu animation
- Fixed RTL alignment in footer links
- Better dark mode contrast for card borders
### 1.0.1
- Fixed hamburger menu not closing on link click
- Improved loading spinner animationHotfixes
If your published template has a critical bug (broken rendering, console errors), you can request an expedited review:
- Fix the issue and bump the patch version
- Upload the update as normal
- In the upload notes, mention “Critical bugfix — requesting expedited review”
- The review team prioritises critical fixes and typically reviews within 24 hours
