Attribution
The “free with attribution” model lets you distribute your template for free while maintaining brand visibility and earning passive income from attribution removal fees.
How attribution works
When a trainer uses a free_with_attribution template, a small, unobtrusive link is automatically added to their website’s footer:
Designed by Jane DeveloperThe link points to your portfolio URL (set in your developer account profile). If you haven’t set a portfolio URL, the link points to your marketplace profile page.
What the attribution looks like
The attribution is rendered as a small text link in the footer area:

Designed by Jane Developer

The attribution is styled to be subtle — small font, muted colour — so it doesn’t distract from the trainer’s brand. The platform controls the rendering; you don’t need to add anything to your Footer component.
You do not need to manually add attribution to your Footer component. The platform injects it automatically for free_with_attribution templates.
Attribution removal
Trainers can pay a one-time fee to remove the attribution link. When they do:
- The attribution link is immediately removed from their website
- You receive 95% of the removal fee
- The removal is permanent — no recurring charges
Revenue from removals
Attribution removal generates passive income:
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Removal fee | Set by the platform |
| Your share | 95% |
| Platform share | 5% |
| Payout | Included in your regular weekly payout |
Removal transactions appear in your revenue dashboard alongside regular sales.
When to use attribution
The attribution model works well when:
- You’re new to the marketplace — get your templates on as many sites as possible to build your reputation
- You want exposure — every site using your template is a live portfolio piece linking back to you
- You want passive income with zero friction — trainers adopt free templates more readily, and a percentage will pay to remove the attribution
- You have a paid template too — the free version acts as a lead generator for your premium offerings
When NOT to use attribution
Consider paid licensing instead when:
- Your template is premium quality — don’t undersell exceptional work
- You don’t need the exposure — established developers may prefer direct revenue
- The design is highly unique — unique designs command a price; giving them away dilutes their value
Strategy: the free-to-paid funnel
A common approach is to release a free-with-attribution template as a simpler version of a paid template:
- Free template — clean, functional, but basic. 3-4 pages, simple layout.
- Standard template — same design language but with more pages, animations, page builder support, and polish. Priced at £25-£50.
- Exclusive template — the ultimate version. Every feature, bespoke animations, comprehensive page set. Priced at £100+.
Trainers discover your work through the free template. When they want more, they see your paid offerings in the marketplace under the same author.
Free-with-attribution templates that gain traction (50+ active sites) tend to drive significant sales of the developer’s paid templates. The attribution link directly exposes your brand to visitors of those sites.
